On the 1st of December, Blackpink member Rosé appeared on JTBC “Newsroom” for an interview.

There, she explained how the drinking game-turned-song came to be. “All my friends were non-Koreans because I was working on the album overseas at the time,” she explained. “I told them that I would teach them a Korean drinking game. The game I like best is APT, so I taught it to them. I chose APT because it’s simple and fun, but they loved it.” She further explained that she “decided to go with [APT]” for the subject of her song, then connected it with a love story and made it about “Let’s meet at the apartment and have fun together.“
Regarding her collaboration with Bruno Mars, Rosé said, “At first, it was fascinating. He gave me a lot of help and a lot of inspiration too. When I told him that I’d be on the news today, he told me to say that ‘Bruno Mars is the best,’” she added with a laugh.
She also revealed that Bruno Mars had coached her on her vocals. “There was a change in my singing style. The song is a bit punky and [Bruno] wanted to capture that style so I sang along enthusiastically. The lyrics are ‘hold on I’m on my way,’ so he told me, ‘wait, I’m on my way right now,’ and he told me to sing as if I was calling to someone far away. But when I did it he said, ‘You’ve never tried to hit on someone, have you?’ He was telling me to sing it a certain way, but I was shy at first, so he helped me along to do it more.”
She also revealed some behind-the-scenes details about the creation of the stylish music video. “I think Bruno had a very clear idea [of what it should be like]. He sent me a reference video one time and said in passing that a pink background would be pretty. And that day, when I went [on set] everything was pink. From the outfits to everything else I could tell he knew exactly what he was going for, and so I learned a lot from him.”
When asked about the Taegukgi (South Korean flag) in the music video, she responded, “That too, he was laughing one day and holding the flag and saying, ‘I think it’d be super fun if I did this and that,’ so I told him, ‘I think that’s a great idea. I think that the Koreans would love that,’ so he had it ready one day. He told me that he bought the flag while he was on tour.“
She revealed that the kiss in the music video was something that Bruno Mars had requested, adding that, “I was like, ‘why do I have to do it,’ and the footage for this is all in the behind-the-scenes video. But in there are lyrics like ‘Kissy face, kissy face,’ and, ‘sent to your phone,’ lyrics like that. But for the kiss scene I asked him, ‘Why do I have to do it,’ and when I said that he told me, ‘It would be weirder if I did it,’ and I agreed with him saying, ‘Yeah, it would be pretty weird,” Rosé told the anchor while laughing.
When asked about her first full-length album, “Rosie,” she answered, “My friends and family call me ‘Rosie’ when they speak to me in English. The reason I named the album [Rosie] was because I wanted to write music that was true to who I am. I thought that if the music gave me comfort when I listened to it, then it would comfort others too, so I hope that many people can relate to this album.”
Rosé confessed that she once had a fear of the studio. “But I’ve become much more comfortable now,” she said. “There was a time when I would word it as a ‘relationship’ with the studio. I kept going to the studio tenaciously until I could express everything I wanted to say and tell it everything I wanted to tell.”
When asked by the anchor about a song in the album that expresses her feelings about internet comments, Rose replied, “It was a day when I was allowing myself to feel those emotions, because I wanted to avoid admitting that I was feeling that way. I was telling myself that I was unaffected by [internet comments] because I wanted myself to think that I wasn’t struggling. But in reality I’m a person too, just a person who feels the same emotions that everyone else feels, and I realized that I too was getting affected by [internet comments]. I wrote the song that day after I was able to be honest with myself with how I was feeling, and I was able to forgive myself. It became a sort of healing song for me.“
Rosé chose “You’re doing well” as the words which give her strength. “I like receiving compliments,” she admitted. “Especially when those around me tell me ‘Chaeyoung, you did so well,’ then I think to myself that I did a good job.“
When the anchor asked whether Rosé’s father still told her everyday to “Come back home Rosie,” Rosé answered while laughing,”These days he tells me as a joke that ‘I never should have sent you to the audition back then.’ He says ‘I just wanted you to have a good experience, I didn’t know I wouldn’t be able to see my daughter like this.”
During a moment of reflection about the 4 years she spent as a trainee and her 8 years as a singer, Rosé said, “When I think on it now, I think I was a little lonely, being a naive 16 year old who came here abruptly after leaving her family behind. I think that thoughts of “I have to make it” were strong back then, because I’d left home for a place so far away. I couldn’t return after failing, because I’d said that I was leaving home to fulfill my dreams. When I would call home sobbing, my parents would tell me, ‘Come back. We wanted you to have the experience. If it’s hard, you can come back anytime you want.’ But then I would refuse. Returning home was something I couldn’t do. I told them that I would go back after debuting.“
When asked about her dream, Rosé shared, “I had a lot of fun. I was very happy while writing these songs, because of how dear this album is to me. It’s my dream to become a singer who can write music like this and who can continue writing music that is true to who I am.”
Last but not least, she revealed that, “Probably, [BLACKPINK] plans to release an album next year and go on tour.“
